Majority of Monk products require a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi connection to work properly. This is because 2.4 GHz is generally more stable than 5 GHz. Many modern routers combine 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz into a single network by default, which can prevent the Monk app from connecting.
This guide walks you through the general steps to split your Wi‑Fi network so your Monk product can connect.
⚠️ Tip: If this feels confusing at any point, we recommend contacting your internet provider and asking them to split your Wi‑Fi into two separate networks: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
A phone, tablet, or computer connected to your home Wi‑Fi
Your Wi‑Fi router nearby
Your router login details (usually printed on a sticker on the router)
Step 1: Open Your Router Settings
Open a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.)
In the address bar, type one of these addresses and press Enter:
192.168.1.1 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.254
💡 If none of these work, check your router’s sticker for a “Default Gateway” address.
Step 2: Log In to Your Router
You’ll be asked for a username and password.
These are often printed on your router (look for labels like “Admin” or “Router Password”).Common defaults:
Username: admin Password: admin or password
⚠️ If the login doesn’t work, your internet provider may have changed it. Contact them for assistance.
Step 3: Find Wi‑Fi or Wireless Settings
Once logged in, look for a section labeled:
Wi-Fi
Wireless
Wireless Settings
Network Settings
You may need to click Advanced to see all options. Each router looks different, so take your time.
Step 4: Separate (Split) the Networks
Look for settings related to:
2.4 GHz
5 GHz
Smart Wi‑Fi
Band Steering
Unified Network
Do the following:
Turn OFF:
Smart Wi‑Fi
Band Steering
Combine Bands / Unified SSID
Make sure 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are enabled separately
Rename the networks so you can tell them apart, e.g.:
HomeWiFi_2.4HomeWiFi_5G
❗ Important: The network names must be different. Otherwise, your Monk product may still try to connect to the 5 GHz network.
Step 5: Save Changes & Restart the Router
Click Save or Apply
Restart your router if prompted
Wait 2–3 minutes for your Wi‑Fi to come back online
Step 6: Reconnect your device to Wi‑Fi
Open Wi‑Fi settings on your device
Select the 2.4 GHz network (example:
HomeWiFi_2.4)Enter your Wi‑Fi password
Check that your device has reconnected successfully.
If This Still Doesn’t Work
You may be unable to split the network or don’t see the options in your router.
Contact your internet provider and tell them:
“I need my Wi-Fi split into two networks: one 2.4 GHz and one 5 GHz.”
This is a standard request, and most providers can do this for you.
Important Notes
Public Wi-Fi, mesh networks, or mobile hotspots may not be compatible
If you’re unsure at any step, stop and contact your ISP to avoid misconfiguring your router
