Priming pushes trapped air out of the pipework so the pump can circulate water properly. You need to do this when you first set the chiller up, and again any time you've drained the system or disconnected a hose.
Before you prime
Priming will fail if any of these aren't right, so check them first.
1. The right hoses are connected
Use the two hoses already attached to your Cocoon. They come out through the hose exit at the base of the tub. The water pipes supplied in the chiller box aren't used with a Cocoon — set them aside.
On the chiller, the inlet is red and the outlet is green. The labels are written from the chiller's point of view, so its outlet is the one that feeds water back into your tub:
- The Cocoon's outlet hose → the chiller's inlet (red)
- The chiller's outlet (green) → the Cocoon's inlet hose
Make sure both connections are tightened firmly. Don't couple the Cocoon's hoses to the chiller's supplied pipes to gain length — this counts as extending the hose and will reduce cooling performance. If they don't reach, move the chiller closer or route the hoses through a different hose exit on the tub.
2. The tub is filled high enough
Inside your Cocoon there are three engraved fill lines. Use the lowest line if you're unsure.
The water level has to sit above the tub's outlet. If it's at or below the outlet, the chiller will draw air instead of water and won't prime. If you want to lower the level afterwards, prime first, then let some water out.
3. The valves are open
Check the taps on both hoses. A tap is open when the handle aligns with the pipe, and closed when it forms a cross with the pipe.
4. The chiller is switched off
Leave it off until priming is finished.
Priming the system
- Find the drain. It's a small black screw cap on the lower right-hand side at the back of the chiller.
- Catch the water. If the chiller is indoors, put a tray or container underneath the drain.
- Open the drain. Let water flow for 10–20 seconds. A steady flow with no spluttering means the system is full of water and the air is out. Stay with the unit while it drains — don't walk away.
- Replace the cap. If the flow makes this awkward, close the taps on the hoses briefly, refit the cap, then reopen them.
Once the cap is back on and both taps are open, the system is primed. Switch the chiller on, press SET, choose your temperature with the arrows, and press OK.
If it still won't prime
Air keeps coming through, or the flow splutters. The level is probably too low. Top the tub up above the lowest fill line and repeat the priming steps.
No water comes out of the drain at all. Check both taps are actually open — aligned with the pipe, not crossed. Then check the hoses are on the right ports.
The pump runs but nothing circulates. Switch off and prime again. Running the pump dry damages it, so don't leave it running while you troubleshoot.
